Chinese DiGRA 2024 – Call for Papers

We are pleased to announce this year’s Chinese DiGRA 10th Anniversary Conference, hosted by Hong Kong Baptist University on the 28th & 29th September 2024. This year’s Chinese DiGRA is a hybrid event. Accepted papers will be presented at the conference in Hong Kong and online.

Call for Papers

This year’s theme is “Digital Pasts, Analog Futures”. We especially welcome papers on the following themes:

  • Real life digital play including e-sports, LAN events, pervasive gaming (such as AR games), and 網吧/網咖 (wangba / wangka).
  • The rise (and fall) of 劇本殺 (jubensha)/ 狼人殺 (langrensha)/ modern board games within pan-Chinese social spaces.
  • Importing and exporting gaming inside Mainland China, including 山寨 (shanzhai) culture, localisation, and globally influential Chinese games.
  • Fan cultures and customisation of both digital and analog play.
  • Platformisation and its influence on games and play inside Chinese speaking regions.
  • Corporate Play: Game Curation / Exhibitions in Chinese speaking regions.

However, we also invite submissions on any aspect of Chinese games, game industries, game design and gaming cultures. We also encourage papers from students, early career researchers and game industry workers.

Submission Format

  • Submissions can be in either Chinese or English. Each abstract will be translated into the other language upon acceptance, subject to double blind peer review.
  • Please submit an abstract of maximum no more than 600 words for English submissions, or no more than 400 characters for Chinese submissions (excluding references).
  • Please submit the abstract as a pdf using the DiGRA template found here.
  • The abstract should be submitted no later than Sunday July 7th 2024, to ashleeip@hkbu.edu.hk
  • Make sure to include “CDiGRA2024 Submission” in the subject line.

Abstracts will be selected by double blind peer review based on their academic rigour and relevance to the themes of the conference. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by July 29th, 2024. Accepted authors will have an opportunity to submit their abstracts for inclusion in the DiGRA Digital Library. Additionally, select abstracts will be invited to submit full papers for inclusion in a special issue. Important dates

  • July 7th: Deadline for submissions.
  • July 29th: Decisions announced. Online presenters receive additional practical information on how to record and submit their presentations (we recommend PowerPoint with voiceover or the free and open software OBS [Open Broadcast Software]).
  • August 1st: Conference registration opens.
  • September 15th: To facilitate subtitling, we ask all online presenters to send us a video (or a PowerPoint presentation with voiceover) and transcript of their presentation in advance. We will translate and subtitle the video/PPT with voiceover. The recorded videos will be made available to the conference attendees shortly before and during the conference, followed by live Q&A sessions.
  • September 27th / 28th: Conference.

About Chinese DiGRA

Chinese DiGRA (中华电子游戏研究协会​ /​ 中華 數位遊戲研究協會) is a regional chapter of DiGRA (Digital Games Research Association) focusing on game research relevant to Chinese speaking countries and the surrounding regions. Chinese DiGRA aims to enhance the quality, quantity, and international profile of games research in the Chinese-speaking context, by developing a network of game scholars and researchers working in the Chinese-speaking world and/or on aspects of Chinese games and gaming cultures, forging links between academic and professional researchers on games, supporting teaching and PhD development in the region, and disseminating and promoting Chinese game scholarship around the world.
